About Us

We are a small group of people who are part of a wider network of transition towns all over the world that are looking to use the power of local community to tackle environmental issues. We are looking to future proof Maynooth for the consequences of Peak Oil and to reduce our town’s carbon footprint. Transition Initiatives seek to develop resilience within our communities. We are looking to move forward by raising awareness about these issues via talks, film evenings and workshops. Community gardening projects, growing your own, rethinking our transport and energy saving are just some of the projects that a typical Transition organisation develops.

Some of our recent local initiatives include:

We have screened The Power Down Show over several weeks in the college, a 10-part TV series that looks at how communities are making themselves more resilient and sustainable as well as exploring the challenges to come.

We have shown one of the most powerful films on this subject; Power of Community: How Cuba survived peak oil.

We have held local food evenings where people brought along dishes made from as many locally sourced ingredients as they could muster.  Everyone was free to sit and sample and discuss how and where they found their inspiration! Recipes have been invented, swapped and enjoyed at these wonderfully social events.

We have been involved with local planting of trees and look forward to seeing more useful planting projects around the town.

A group of us now garden together at one of the allotments at the fishery, sharing ideas, tips, and disaster stories on a regular basis.

A core group of us meet once a month at the college to plan upcoming events.
