Local Food

Why Buy Local Irish Food?
Local food supports Irish farming families
Local food is fresher, so it tastes better and is healthier
Reduced food transportation is better for the environment
Ensures the future of food production and farming in our community and in Ireland
Buying Irish helps to keep money in the local economy
Personal contact with a local food producer can help you understand how your food is grown and processed.

Below is a list of places where you can buy local food and also some local products that you can buy and where to get them. By local we mean as close to Maynooth as possible but also providers of products that are Irish so that there isn't a need for long transport distances when importing from other countries. Feel free to contact us if you are a local food producer or supplier and we will add you to the list.

Some Great Irish Alternatives to Imports
While it’s easy to find local fruits, vegetables, dairy and meat products in all supermarkets, here are a few other Irish products that are available (grown in Ireland, not just processed in Ireland):
O’Hanlon Herbs
Donegal Rapeseed oil
Ballybrado Flour and Cereals
Mileevan honey
Llewellyn’s Orchard Produce for vinegar, cider, wine.

Wild Edibles
Foraging for edible plants is also a great way to eat local. Be surethat you can properly identify plants and avoid busy roads as dirt and exhaust will cover food. Be sure to wear washing up gloves if you’re collecting and cooking nettle!
Some of the wild edibles found around Maynooth include: blackberries, nettle, wild garlic, garlic mustard, sorrel, and hazelnuts.
